The “Susan Bush”

I call this little bush that blooms all over this area every spring the “Susan” bush. In loving memory of my childhood pet, a sleek shiny black cat named “Black Susan”. I rescued her one cold winter day in Kodak, Tennessee. She was very ill and we didn’t think she’d make it through the night. She was sickly and scrawny. I, 9 years old at the time, fell in love with her big saucy green eyes and her sweet meow that sounded like a dove. I was set on naming her Black Susan after Laura Ingalls Wilder’s cat. I nursed her back to health and talked my parents into letting me keep her.

We had this big fenced in back yard we would let her out to play in every day, in this yard we had one of these bushes that Susan would nap under. She loved that bush, ever spring it would bloom red and fiery. It suited her saucy attitude.

Sadly, only four years of having her she became very sick and died. I’ll never forget the way she looked at me the last time.

On October 17 2009 we had a little funeral for Black Susan and buried her under this bush. Kind of like Where the Red Fern Grows.
